Ghana Declines US Health Pact Over Data Concerns

(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has accused Iran of leveraging the Strait of Hormuz as an “economic nuclear weapon,” making it clear that Washington rejects any arrangement that would reopen the vital shipping route under Tehran’s conditions or delay discussions بشأن its nuclear program, according to reports.

As stated by reports citing multiple outlets, Iran has recently presented a proposal to the United States that includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz and ending the ongoing conflict, while postponing negotiations over its nuclear activities to a later stage.

During an appearance on Fox News on Monday, Rubio expressed strong doubts about the proposal. “If what they mean by opening the straits is, ‘Yes, the straits are open, as long as you coordinate with Iran, get our permission, or we’ll blow you up, and you pay us’ – that’s not opening the straits,” he said.

He further warned that allowing Iran to exert effective control over such an international waterway would set a troubling global example. “This is not the Suez Canal, this is not the Panama Canal, these are international waters. And if that’s normalized, not only does that set a precedent in the Middle East, it sets a precedent all over the world,” he argued, calling the strait “the equivalent of an economic nuclear weapon that they’re trying to use against the world.”

Addressing Iran’s nuclear ambitions, Rubio reiterated a firm position, emphasizing their central role in ongoing tensions. “Suffice it to say that the nuclear question is the reason why we’re in this in the first place,” he said.

He also rejected the notion that there are moderate factions within Iran’s leadership. “they’re all hardliners in Iran.” “There’s no doubt in my mind that at some point in the future if this radical clerical regime remains in charge in Iran, they will decide they want a nuclear weapon… That fundamental issue still has to be confronted. That still remains the core issue here.”

According to reports, the White House confirmed that US President Donald Trump has reviewed Tehran’s proposal. However, individuals familiar with the matter indicated that he was not satisfied with the offer. A US official reportedly suggested that accepting it could be perceived as undermining Trump’s longstanding position that Iran’s nuclear program must be dismantled.

Iran, for its part, has consistently maintained that it does not intend to develop nuclear weapons and has rejected US demands to give up its reserves of highly enriched uranium or dismantle its nuclear infrastructure.
